Dr. Paola Cattaneo is a tenured researcher and group leader at the Institute of Genetic and Biomedical Research of the National Research Council (IRGB-CNR) located in Milan (Italy). She graduated in Pharmacology in 2008 at the University of Milan and obtained her PhD in Molecular Medicine in 2013 from the same University. She then trained for over 10 years in top Institutions recognized worldwide for research excellence: at the Department of Cardiology at the University of California San Diego (US) with the support of a Marie Curie fellowship where she explored molecular mechanisms underlying cardiogenesis and at the Institute of Cardiac Regeneration in Frankfurt (Germany) where she studied cardiac fibrosis. With the ultimate goal of developing regenerative therapies for the injured heart, since 2023 her independent research aims to decipher mechanisms by which transcription factors, epigenetic enzymes and regulatory elements control cardiomyocyte proliferation/maturation and activation of cardiac fibroblasts. In 2023 she was awarded an ERC Starting grant.

Dr. Cattaneo is passionate and curious about science but also likes to travel, to discover peculiar restaurants and to invent creative games with her kids.

Our Projects

BRIDGING HEART DEVELOPMENT AND DISEASE

Our projects stem from the idea that we can gain valuable insights from the physiological process of cardiac development and leverage this knowledge to promote the regeneration of the adult injured heart. In this regard, we are aiming to comprehensively investigate the differentiation and maturation of cardiomyocytes, the origin and heterogeneity of cardiac fibroblasts and the phenotypic and morphological alterations at the basis of congenital heart diseases as well as aquired phatological events.
